Geek is Chic

She had a dream

Last Saturday I went to Cybher, a female blogging conference, which was the brain child of Siân aka Geek is the new chic. I was totally impressed as this was one woman’s dream, Siân had seen what was happening in the states and wanted to bring it to the UK.

I learnt so much at the conference that I am going to separate into a few days of posts. There is so much I want to share with you lovely Fe-liners. I am going to separate my posts into the following: Why blog?, Wordpress hints and tips and How to achieve your dreams.

Why Blog?

Cybher, female blogging conference, London, May 2012

This is what female bloggers look like.

What was coming over loud and clear on Saturday is that blogging gives women the power to do whatever they want to do and tell who ever they like about it.

It was inspiring for me to see so many women up on the stage saying how they had made a living out of blogging, whether this was by having sponsored posts on their sites, selling content as an ebook or selling advertising. Take a look at Natalie Lue’s site, Baggage Reclaim, for a little inspiration.

The other thing that came across loud and clear is that you can make money from your blog on and offline. Your blog is a showcase of your work, it is the new CV.

Your blog

  • Have a goal
You need to figure out what your objectives are and what you want from your blog?
  • Have commitment
Be prepared to put the hard work in, it will not be an overnight success.
  • Find your voice
Everyone is different, find your style and write about something that you know about, you will become a spokes person for this topic.
  • Add visual content
Photos and videos make your blog look good!
  • Content is key
Be genuine and authentic, good content will rise to the top.

Is there a book in your blog?

This is something I had never thought about myself but I went to a really interesting seminar called, Blog to Book in 30 days, with Philippa Davies from PJ Publishers. She taught herself to self publish her books from her cow shed! Her advice was to use PressBooks which has been built by WordPress and you can make a book for free.

More to come tomorrow about what I learnt about WordPress at Cybher. But just want to leave you with one of the best things about the conference, the conference bag! I am definately going next year, who’s with me?
